The territory is divided into three large regions: the Rocky Mountains in the west, the central Great Plains and the Appalachian Mountains in the east. The main rivers are Mississippi, Missouri, Colorado, Rio Grande, Ohio and Tennessee, while in the northeast are the Great Lakes. The climate is very varied: subarctic in Alaska, continental in the plains, arid in the west, Mediterranean in California, oceanic in the northeast and subtropical in Florida. The population is mainly concentrated along the coasts. The main cities are Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami.
