STATE AND NATION

This concept map explains the difference between State and Nation, two key concepts in political geography. A State is a group of people living in a territory organized with a government and laws and it has a Constitution, the fundamental law. States can be distinguished by their form (unitary state or federal state) and by their system of government, such as parliamentary republic, presidential republic or constitutional monarchy. A Nation, instead, is a community of people united by common elements such as language, culture, traditions and history and it does not necessarily require a government or political borders. This scheme helps understand the political organization of states around the world.
