It borders several states, including the Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola, and has a small outlet on the Atlantic Ocean. The territory is dominated by the Congo River basin, with equatorial forests in the north and savannas in the central and southern areas. Important African lakes such as Tanganyika, Albert, Edward, Kivu, and Mweru are located in the region, along with mountain ranges like the Ruwenzori and Mitumba, where active volcanoes are present. The climate is equatorial hot and humid. The population exceeds 115 million inhabitants, with more than 200 ethnic groups and many local languages in addition to French. The economy is based on agriculture, fishing, mineral industries, timber, and major natural resources such as diamonds, copper, coltan, and oil.
