The 1st War of Independence (1848-1849) is the attempt by Charles Albert of Savoy (Kingdom of Sardinia) to drive the Austrians out of Lombardy. Although ending with the defeat of the Piedmontese, the First War of Independence is the first step that will lead to the Unification of Italy.
