Among these are the Sahara, the largest hot desert on Earth (in Northern Africa), and the Rift Valley, a gigantic fracture in the Earth's crust about 6000 km long (in Equatorial Africa). The largest African island is Madagascar (in Southern Africa). The territory is dominated by important reliefs such as the Atlas, the Ethiopian Highlands, and the Drakensberg Mountains, as well as great peaks including Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the continent. Numerous rivers, including the Nile, Congo, and Niger, and large lakes like Victoria and Tanganyika enrich the territory. The climate varies from tropical at the equator to desert in the Sahara, and temperate in the northern and southern extremities.
